Introducing an interview series with folks, from all over the world, trying to make a difference. First up: a two-part interview with Ayesha Malik!

Known as @Spishaa on Twitter, @spisha on Instagram, @ayeshaspisha on TikTok, I have long admired Ayesha for her progressive politics, championing of diversity and representation, and, of course, her beautifully maintained, gorgeous curly hair.

I too have curly hair (and you can read about my struggle with caring for my curls here and here) although not nearly as long and glorious as Ayesha’s. Both our curl care journeys, however, were deeply influenced by Deva Curl products. We used them to maintain our hair, we followed the Deva Curl methods to care for our curls physically, emotionally, even spiritually.

And this worked for many years, until it all came to a screeching halt. In late 2019, reports began to surface about Deva products causing serious damage to not just customers’ curls. Tens of thousands of members of a Facebook group about Deva damage reported migraines, depression, balding, anxiety. I joined the class action lawsuit…
